Dubai private schools ranked among the top 14 in the world

December 8, 2023

In a groundbreaking achievement, Dubai's private schools have secured a spot among the world's top 14 in mathematics, science, and reading, according to the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) cycle. Surpassing the National Agenda target of the top 15, this historic accomplishment underscores the educational prowess of the emirate.

Conducted every three years by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PISA evaluates the ability of 15-year-olds to apply their knowledge in reading, mathematics, and science to real-life challenges.

Global Recognition for Dubai Schools

Dubai's private schools achieved an impressive ninth place globally in mathematics, boasting a mean score of 497, surpassing the OECD average by 25 points. Additionally, these schools secured the 13th position worldwide in reading, with a mean score of 498, and the 14th position in science, scoring an average of 503 points.

Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Director-General of the Dubai Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), celebrated this remarkable feat, emphasizing the significant strides made by Dubai's educational institutions. He attributed the success to the leadership of school principals, the expertise of teachers, and the unwavering determination of students.

Exceptional Performances and Commitment

Outstanding-rated schools exhibited exceptional performance, achieving scores of 551 in mathematics, 553 in science, and 554 in reading—significantly surpassing the OECD average. Schools following the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum emerged as top performers, securing scores of 535 in mathematics, 538 in science, and 528 in reading.

Fatma Belrehif, CEO of Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau, praised the commitment of Dubai's private schools, highlighting their dedication to providing high-quality education across various curricula. She emphasized that the effectiveness of the robust quality assurance system is evident in the outstanding achievements of schools rated Good and better, which consistently outperform global averages in international assessments.

Acknowledging Resilience and Dedication

Amid the challenges posed by the pandemic, Dubai's private schools demonstrated resilience by swiftly resuming face-to-face teaching and learning. This commitment allowed students and staff to reconnect, contributing to improved learning outcomes. Dr Al Karam expressed gratitude to school leaders, teachers, parents, and students whose commitment to quality and improvement has propelled Dubai's private school community to global recognition.

The PISA 2022 study involved 9,250 students from 171 schools offering eight different curricula, showcasing the broad participation and diverse educational landscape in Dubai. This achievement not only reflects the present success but also positions Dubai's private schools for continued excellence in the future.
