UAE Airports Welcome 72 Million Passengers in the First Half of 2024
August 21, 2024
Passenger traffic at UAE airports witnessed a remarkable increase of 14.2 per cent in the first half of 2024, with a total of 71.75 million passengers, compared to 62.79 million during the same period last year.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), attributed this impressive growth to the UAE leadership's long-term vision and strategic guidance. He highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure development, regulatory improvements, and the advancement of digital transformation within civil aviation as key factors contributing to this success.
UAE Airport Traffic:
Al Suwaidi emphasised that the strong performance and global reputation of UAE national carriers are clearly reflected in these growth figures. He stated, “We remain optimistic about the future, with the country taking deliberate steps to further expand and develop this crucial sector. Our commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety and security, adopting new technologies to enhance the passenger experience, and positioning the UAE as a central hub for air transport in the region, and a significant player in the global aviation network, remains unwavering.”
He further mentioned that the GCAA is actively collaborating with federal and local partners, alongside national carriers, to explore and cultivate cooperative relationships in air transport. This includes expanding into existing markets and identifying new opportunities globally.
Al Suwaidi also highlighted that the GCAA has successfully established air transport agreements with over 90 per cent of the world's nations, demonstrating their dedication to advancing development and expansion plans that enhance the competitive position of the UAE's civil aviation sector on the global stage.
During the first half of the year, UAE airports recorded 20,274,694 passenger arrivals, 21,090,750 departures, and 30,391,978 transit passengers.

In terms of air cargo, the first half of 2024 saw a total of 2,162,786 tonnes of cargo handled, comprising 528,430 tonnes of imports, 245,217 tonnes of exports, and 1,389,136 tonnes of transit cargo. National carriers accounted for 68 per cent of this total air cargo traffic.
Regarding overall air traffic, there were 499,789 movements in the first half of the year, marking an 11.8 per cent growth compared to the same period last year. February stood out with the highest increase in air traffic movements, recording a 15 per cent growth compared to February 2023.
